The aim of the course is to update and build upon the skills learned in the initial 12 hour standard Mental Health First Aid course. It is conducted over 4 hours and contains new films and additional materials.
Engaging Leaders in MHFA
This session, conducted over 90 minutes, is recommended for leaders and managers thinking about introducing Mental Health First Aid to their workplace.
It introduces you to the notion of how MHFA can support mentally healthy workplaces. It is a ”taster” of what is taught in the Mental Health First Aid course and provides an informal space to discuss the challenges and opportunities of managing mental health problems in the workplace. It contains information on how leaders can support their employees facing a mental health problem.
MHFA for non-suicidal self-injury
Evidence indicates that people who engage in non suicidal self injury are at a higher risk of a suicide attempt. According to an Australian national survey, 8.1% of people will engage in non-suicidal self-injury at some point in their lives. Although it can occur at any age, self-injury is most common in adolescents and young adults. About 5% of 10 – 15 yr olds and 75% of 18 – 24yr olds have deliberately hurt themselves in the past year.
This 4 hour face to face course gives participants an opportunity to learn how to help someone who is engaging in self-injury. This course is based on guidelines developed through expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.
It teaches:
- Why people engage in self injury
- How to talk to someone about their self-injury
- How to help the person stay safe
- How to connect someone with appropriate professional help
- How to assess for suicidal thoughts and behaviours
